Yes, you can do well by studying your teacher and learning what kind of response each particular teacher wants. This is good advice because each teacher has certain requirements and look for certain things. Some teachers just want to be given the straight and easy answer while others want long, drawn out explanations (or demonstrations) of how you came about with your answer. By understanding your teacher then you can provide what they want and your grades will improve.
