What advice would you give someone who wanted to open a small manufacturing facility in Mexico?

Have you considered ';SHELTERS';?

Shelters are Mexican firms that provide the following services: personnel recruitment, administrative services (including accounting, payroll, tax, import/export and personnel management services) and legal counseling. They have an authorized Maquila program.

- These firms charge on a man-hour basis.

- Since you don't register a business in Mexico (the

Shelter Firm is the registered business), you can

avoid risks related to legal, tax compliance, customs and

labor issues. What advice would you give someone who wanted to open a small manufacturing facility in Mexico?

DO NOT DO IT!
Mexico is becoming very efficient these day's making openinga new buisness easier than before. I suggest avoiding border towns and going a little further south to places such as Ciudad Obregon and Hermosillo where the quality of life index is much better.
You need a good circle of friends in Mexico to help you get started. Then you need to make sure you have the advantage of having a Mexican citizen on your ';BOD';. The tax consequences and accounting practices of both countries are very different you should consult with your tax preparer, accountant, international business attorney. Depending on your business model your goal should be fairly defined by now. Obviously your doing your homework, keep on the right track. Set up a business journal, list all questions as they arise and get the answers. Like all businesses, risk is a constant, but your preparation is key in having a good chance of success.
