This is about when you give advice to dog owners and suggest training methods, breed descriptions or anything else that may pop up.
Do you offer advice that you have picked up from others or have you done everything you suggest?Do you always have experience with the advice you give?
If it's training methods, it's something I've done.
If it's health information/advice, it's something I've dealt with.
If it's information on a breed, it's something I've dealt with, witnessed, learned from friends with the breed, or researched through a reliable source (i.e. Parent Club website or articles by people with an established interest in the breed).Do you always have experience with the advice you give?
My advice is either from my own practical experience or after a lot of research - usually a combination of both.
I've been studying dogs (particularly training and behaviour) since I was old enough to read. I don't mean reading personal websites and books written by self proclaimed ';listeners / whisperers'; but the text books and articles written by the proffesionals. I'm the sort of nerd who reads scientific journals for fun.
I don't tend to form strong opinions quickly - I will usually research everything thoroughly, looking at both sides to draw a considered opinion from it all.
I don't tend to offer advice on diet, health etc because I am happy to admit I have very little knowledge in these fields.
Of course I do. It would be pointless and in some situations dangerous to give advice on something I have not experienced or researched. I do also offer advice picked up from others, because no matter how experienced you can be, there is always something you have not heard or learned. I have done everything I have suggested or I would not have suggested it.
I never give advice if I don't have personal experience with it.
For example: I have enough basic knowledge regarding common car problems that I could shout out a general idea if someone asked but would I? Never. Because everything I know it's just what I've heard by word of mouth because most of my friends are motor heads %26amp; not from my personal experiences or expertise.
To me it's the same with dog ownership %26amp; training. If you don't personally know from experience don't say it because you're just repeating google facts at that point.
Unless it's been personally tried %26amp; true by me I won't advise it to others.
With the training advice I give, I will either of had the experience from myself, training my own dogs, or picked up knowledge from the dog training classes that I help out at. However, (this may sound sad) I will often think up ways in my head of how to train things eg- recall or dog aggression, then try out the techniques myself.
Other advise, it's a mixture. But things I do give out, are either from internet, books, professional trainers or experience, I never make things up! In fact a lot of my knowledge has come from this!
Honestly I have done everything that I suggest, they are the training methods that I currently use or have used on my own personal dogs.
As far as breed descriptions go, the only ones I answer without looking it up are based on my own experience with dogs.
If I dont know the answer i look it up on dogbreedinfocenter.com
or I dont answer it at all.
I would never give advice or give any information unless I was 110% sure that I am correct from my own experience.
I never look up an answer on the internet. Most information is correct but I have ran into some information that isn't.
I'm a dog obedience trainer, groomer, breeder, I have worked own my farm for 39 years and have ran into almost any thing one can think of having an average of 40 animals.
Having to do much of your own vet. work is a requirement when owning a farm. I do have to call the vet out when there is something that I can not or do not know how to handle. I always learn something and have lots of questions to ask.
I have organized many free clinics at the fair grounds that is free to the public to help educate pet and farm animals. I have assisted my vet in c-sections and what ever else he has needed me for.
I feel blessed to have such a wonderful vet that I can email then he will do research from the top data of the day and email me back. I trust him more than my own doctor.
I took classes and became a judge many years ago. My list is long so I will stop here. I have experienced and have learned a lot in 39 years and it has been very rewarding. I really enjoy helping others in any way that I can and expect nothing back in return. I have truly had a wonderful life living with and caring for animals and people. My children grew up in a very good environment and it was always so much fun when the school bus arrived at my farm for a field trip. I still have farm field trips with our local agricultural dept, at the high school. lol I always keep learning something when the kids come out with their questions. Kids are just great!
Peace
Honestly most of the questions here require common sense...
I've tried everything that I suggest for others, especially when it comes to training, food, etc...
I have always done what i suggest either with my dog, or with my parents dogs. I do not pass on hearsay, or if I do, I claim that so and so said this.
well if i don't know something that somebody asked, i don't answer it or i research the question. i don't pull false information out of my butt.
When I give an answer I am mostly relying on my training and hands on experience.
Yes i have had experience with everything i suggest .... but most of the time its common sense needed :-)
As far as dogs....yes, I've done it all...some of it, toooooooo much.
